BDG Full Form in Medical

What Is The Full Form Of BDG In Medical?

BDG full form in medical is Bidirectional Glenn, sometimes called Bidirectional Cavopulmonary Anastomosis. This is a surgical procedure used in pediatric cardiac surgery. It temporarily improves blood oxygenation in a person with congenital heart defects in one functional ventricle.

It is usually performed on kids with single ventricle heart damage or defects, like HLHS (Hypoplastic left heart syndrome). People who are not suitable for a complete repair of their heart defects are eligible for the BDG procedure. It may be an alternative to a more definitive surgery involving complete systemic circulation and pulmonary embolus ablation.

What else should you know about BDG?

BDG is performed in two steps: one involves connecting the superior vena cava, thus enabling it to bring deoxygenated blood from the upper body and head to the heart, and the PA from the lungs to the human heart to deliver enriched blood. In the second step, the shunting is removed, and the inferior vena cava brings deoxygenated blood from the heart (lower body), connecting them directly to the pulmonary arteries.

Likewise other surgeries, BDG has been associated with various complications and risks, such as infection, bleeding, and the negative effect of anaesthesia.
