CRB Full Form in Medical is Cervical Ripening Balloon. It is a modern mechanical method for the generation of Labour, thereby eliminating the risks of Hyperstimulation entitled with pharmacological approaches. In simple terms, CRB is an often-used method for non-pharmacologically inducing labour in the presence of an unfavourable cervix. After CRB insertion, delivery starts spontaneously in about 25% of pregnancies.
The word cervical ripening comprises the procedure by which the cervix thins, softens, dilates, and becomes more flexible. Cervical Ripening balloon works by constantly putting pressure on both sides of the cervix during the entire dilation process. Once the balloon is inflated inside the cervix, it helps to exert pressure on the cells of the cervix, which helps to increase and dilate the tissue’s response to prostaglandins and oxytocin. These are the two primary hormones that help promote labour.
CRB is effective, as per various studies conducted by experts. One report states that a balloon catheter is as effective as PGE in inducing vaginal delivery within one day of the onset of labour. It can be performed with lower rates of uterine hyperstimulation and similar infection rates and caesarean sections. However, the balloon inside the cervix is uncomfortable as well as painful. It also causes minimal infection.
