ACS full form in medical is Acute Coronary Syndrome. ACS is a bunch of conditions that happen when your heart suddenly doesn’t get enough blood. This can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, and other signs that might mean you’re having a heart attack. Since our hearts are like the main engine that pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of our bodies, any problem with its blood supply can be a big deal. That’s why it’s super important to spot and treat ACS ASAP. Most of the time, the troublemaker is a buildup of fatty stuff, called plaque, on the walls of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Over time, this plaque can pile up and narrow the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through.
When you show up at a hospital with suspected ACS, doctors will usually run a few tests to figure out what’s going on, like an electrocardiogram (ECG) and some blood tests. Once they confirm it’s ACS, the treatment plan will depend on how bad it is and the exact type of ACS you have. In some cases, just taking medication might be enough to get the blood flowing back to the heart. But, in more serious situations, doctors might suggest more invasive procedures, like angioplasty or coronary bypass surgery.
