SGOT Full Form in Medical term is Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase. Aspartate aminotransferase is its formal name, although everyone just calls it AST. It’s an enzyme found in organs and tissues other than bones, such as the heart, kidneys, liver, and muscles. The SGOT enzyme is made in the liver. Smaller amounts are produced by the kidney, brain, heart and muscles.

A healthy man’s blood will have low levels of SGOT. Normally, the SGOT concentration in blood is between 5 and 40 units per liter of serum. The blood levels of SGOT and AST rise if there is damage to cardiac, liver, kidney, or any other tissue.

In most cases, elevated levels of AST indicate liver damage; however, they may also be the result of damage to another organ, such as the kidney or heart. This is why in addition to looking at other liver enzymes, clinicians routinely perform AST tests.
