The full form of SOS in Medical is Sinusoidal Obstruction Syndrome. Sinusoidal Obstruction Syndrome is also known as Hepatic Veno-Occlusive Disease (VOD). This is considered a life-threatening disease where the small veins in the liver are obstructed. The primary reason for Sinusoidal Obstruction Syndrome is the high dose of chemotherapy or excessive exposure to hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids.

During the condition, the person experiences weight gain due to fluid retention. In addition, the liver size increases and the bilirubin levels in the blood are elevated. Sinusoidal Obstruction Syndrome is the terminology used when VOD is caused by chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant.
